This painting was born of injury, recovery and resistance.

In early December I suffered a blow to the head that could easily have been fatal, or at the very least, life changing. Miraculously I was left only with a giant goose egg and a concussion. As it turns out I’m hardheaded in more ways than one!

Recovery felt painfully slow as I struggled with my vision, balance and concentration. The noise in my head and ears (shout out to concussion induced tinnitus!) made it feel like I’d had 20 shots of espresso while attending a raucous concert three feet from the speakers.

Meanwhile, our city has been under attack from our own government. Citizens are being kidnapped, tortured and murdered in our streets. The low thump-thump-thump of helicopters overhead has a rattled city even more on edge than ever. And yet, we have come together as a community as a grassroots force of resistance. Protests, boycotts, mutual aid and vigils have become the daily and weekly norm for so many of us. In the face of adversity, we celebrate diversity.

Hivemind is not about losing oneself in the crowd. It is about finding strength in shared awareness. It is about choosing to heal and resist together.
